Bubbles and Happiness

An analogy that our youth pastor at LifeSprings gave has been stuck in my head since Sunday, so I have decided to follow the hint God has placed on my heart and write about it on my blog.

The analogy was something a child at heart like me could easily understand. It compared our chasing of worldly happiness to bubbles. Yes, bubbles. My personal favorites as a kid were the grape-flavored ones that you had try to eat out of the air-I also remember the stomach ache I had after consuming half a bottle-but that’s besides the point. He made reference to them in the fact that what we chase here on earth we might achieve, but it will pop, and suddenly we are left longing for more. This is an amazing example to me because I could never quite catch on to why I have always been such a fickle and variable person. It’s because I was chasing bubbles, thinking earthly things could satisfy my happiness. And sadly, I’ve been realizing, I still do occasionally chase bubbles. If only I had a boyfriend, then I’d be happy! * pop * If only I had faith like this person, then I’d be happy! * pop* If only I made more money then I’d be happy! * pop * If only I could be that much better at singing then I’d be happy! * pop *

Why do we feel this way? Because we eventually realize that as soon as we pop one bubble, there are suddenly even more to pop. That we can never just be content with what we have, or want, or what we think we might need. God is so much more that what we wear, how in shape we are, how much money we want to make, the house we live in, and the relationships we think we need. Why?? Because being His radical follower is all that should matter! He is incomprehensible and supernatural. He moves us in ways that we never thought possible, and breaks us with love we never thought we’d ever find. If you drop everything and become a Disciple of Him, not just a Believer, you realize how powerful and moving He truly is. We have so little time here on earth, so why waste any second of it thinking of pointless things? I never went into the band expecting money, or fame, but went in committed to sharing God’s amazing love with everyone I meet, and it has taken me out of my comfort zone and into the most amazing adventure! Just think, there are so many struggling to be stronger in their faith, and struggling to find faith itself. How can we keep it to ourselves? Following God to me is being able to sit back on the lawn satisfied with watching the bubbles float past you. It's being content in what we do because we put all our actions towards the Lord. You may have missed popping that salary raise, or the high grades you were trying to get, but following God’s will has left you filled and content nevertheless. Surrender, and let Him take control of your life, and His rewards will leave you floating on air.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree full of life.” ~Proverbs 13:12

“Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans WILL SUCCEED.” ~ Proverbs 16:3

  1. Nice analogy! I especially like the tie into Proverbs 16:13...the key there is to know that when we commit our actions to the Lord, our actions become his and then we are assured of success.
